Buyer's Guide: Choosing the Correct Products

Step 1: Soil Test

The first step in treating any field is getting a soil test done. A soil test will help you determine which nutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), if any, your soil is lacking to grow the crop you are wanting to plant as well as helping you determine soil pH levels. Soil pH levels are essential to the growth and production of any crop. Ideal soil pH for most food plot crops rangest from 6.3 to 7.0

Step 2: Ground Zero

Product: Ground Zero

Ground Zero (Advanced-Cal), offers the all around #1 soil amendment formula for food plots. Ground Zero contains a blend of liquid calcium to boost cell production, balance soil pH, and increase nutrient uptake much faster than traditional AG lime. It also contains Humic Acid to provide proper nutrient exchange and boost protein levels as well as containing a patented blend of trace minerals and micronutrients that provide a high energy source for plants, boosting root growth and production.

If you recently cleared a wooded area for the food plot or are seeing an abundance of weeds in the area of the food plot, Ground Zero calcium is a needed addition to raise soil pH, reduce soil acidity, and knock back the germination of weeds in the area. In addition to raising soil pH, Ground Zero can be applied on top of new seeding areas to increase seed germination and offer a better start to new growth.

Application Rate: 3 to 5 gallons per acre

Step 3: Seed Starter

This is only needed for seeding new food plots.

Product: Bio-Act

Bio-Act is a nutritional plant supplement that can be used a soil treatment, seed start, or foliar feed. Bio-Act contains a blend of micronutrients and minerals that provide a unique source of nutrition to the plant and to the soil. This blend of micronutrients also contains Humic Acid, which provides valuable nutrition for the plant and adds feed value to the crop.

Bio-Act boosts plant growth and production by amplifying photosynthesis, adding high carbon energy to the soil, increasing plant immune systems, and much more. Bio-Act can be applied directly to the soil, pre-green up, or as a foliar feed to add an instant source of nutrition to the plant.

Application Rate: 32 ounces per acre

Step 4: Fertilizing Your Fields

This step will vary based on which crop you are wanting to plant.

For legume fertilization (soybeans, alfalfa, clover, chickpeas, lentils, sainfoin, and trefoil):

Product: 3-18-18+

3-18-18+ is a low nitrogen, high phosphorus and potassium liquid fertilizer, used mostly for legume crops that fixate most of their own nitrogen in the root zone of the plant.

Application Rate: 5 to 8 gallons per acre

Product: Nitro-Buck 20-0-0+

Nitro-Buck is a nitrogen alone fertilizer to offer additional nitrogen to any crop. Although legumes do create most of their nitrogen needed for a successful crop, adding additional nitrogen after emergences of crop as a foliar feed in a small amount can push crop production to the next level.

Application Rate: 2 gallons per acre

For brassica fertilization (turnips, rape, kale, and radishes):

Product: 10-20-10+

10-20-10+ is a medium nitrogen, high phosphorus, and medium potassium liquid fertilizer mostly used for brassica crops that need a medium nitrogen and potassium and a higher phosphorus uptake for proper growth.

Application Rate: 5 to 8 gallons per acre

Product: Nitro-Buck 20-0-0+

Nitro-Buck is a nitrogen alone fertilizer to offer additional nitrogen to any crop. Brassica crops can greatly benefit from additional nitrogen added after emergences of crop as foliar feed to boost growth and maintain late season coverage.

Application Rate: 2 to 3 gallons per acre

For mixed plots fertilization (turnips, rape, kale, radishes, soybeans, alfalfa, clover, chickpeas, lentils, sainfoin, and trefoil):

Product: 10-20-10+

1020-10+ is a medium nitrogen, high phosphorus, and medium potassium liquid fertilizer mostly used for brassica crops that need a medium nitrogen and potassium and a higher phosphorus uptake for proper growth.

For corn fertilization:

When planting a corn food plot, we suggest applying 75 units of dry nitrogen fertilizer or liquid 32% at plant time before adding out 10-20-10+ as a starter fertilizer and Nitro-Buck as the additional nitrogen needed to grow a corn crop, to ensure a long-lasting nitrogen supply to the corn crop throughout the growing season. Corn needs 1 unit of nitrogen for every bushel of corn planned to be produced per acre of land, most food plotters are aiming for 100 to 150 bushels or 100 to 150 units of nitrogen per acre.

Starter Fertilizer: 10-20-10+

10-20-10+ as a starter fertilizer for corn crop offers the essential NPK for starting a viable corn crop off right.

Application Rate: 5 gallons per acre

Main Product: Nitro-Buck 20-0-0+

Nitro-Buck is a nitrogen alone fertilizer to offer additional nitrogen to a corn crop after initial application of 75 units of nitrogen.

Application Rate if applied 75 units of nitrogen before or at planting: 7 to 10 gallons per acre

Step 5: Micronutrients and Mineral Foliar Feed

Product: Folar-Act

Folar-Act is designed to be sprayed directly on the vegetation and absorbed through the leaves as a foliar feed to boost growth and health. Folar-Act promotes root elongation, increase photosynthesis, improves nutrient uptake and utilization, and much more, all to increase plant growth and overall health.

Application Rate: 32 ounces per acre
